A Love Letter to Liza, Cabaret & Jazz: Kiara with a K

4.5 stars

The three hammy Macri sisters are back with a vengeance this FRINGE WORLD. This time, they’re armed with sequins, a posse of talented performers, and smooth jazz.

Kiara Macri leads the show with incomparable flair, with opening number “Blackbird” a clear highlight. Her powerful stage presence and charismatic hosting abilities set the perfect tone for this show which is positioned to make every cast member’s “dreams come true”.

Her sister Nicola serves as a brilliant earmark between burlesque, tap, and cabaret performances, with signature ‘shrug and a smile’ comedic nuances.

A sequence she performs with a French beret is a shining moment for Nicola—proving she’s worth much more than clean-up duties (which she jokingly admits is part of her role in this larger-than-life show).

The third Macri sister, Alysha (better known as Veruca Sour), is no stranger to the Perth burlesque circuit.

Her signature animated facial expressions have the audience in hysterics, and she is given many moments to shine in this wonderfully inclusive and genre-blending show.

Special mention must also go to the talented ensemble members of this show.

Sven Ironside is formidable in his stirring eleven o’clock number, “I Don’t Care Much” from Cabaret, Shannon Rogers is divine in her French burlesque sequence, and Lucy Lovegun is captivating when she takes the lead for “Bring on the Men” from Jekyll & Hyde.

This show is a wonderful example of the power of old-school variety shows. With a healthy dose of burlesque, tap dance, comedy, clowning, and cabaret the hour flies by like a breeze and each number is met with anticipation as to what genre will be tackled next.

Though Kiara with a K has just closed at FRINGE WORLD, Kiara promises a second iteration will pop up soon. Don’t miss out on these tickets when this show’s return is announced.
